My first blog about gemstones will start with Amethyst – my birthstone. Amethyst is quartz, a group of minerals of the same chemical composition ( SiO2) and similar physical properties. Amethyst is commonly purple, violet or a pale red-violet, although Prasiolite is also called “Green Amethyst” and is a pale lime green after heat-treating. The name Amethyst means (Greek) “not drunken” (wow – I don’t drink, either!) and was worn as an amulet against drunkeness. It was formerly a favorite gemstone of the high officials of the Christian church. Amethyst can be found in many parts of the world, but some of the nicest, deep purple-blue specimens comes from Brazil and parts of Africa. It’s hardness is 7 on the Mohs scale, making it a good, relatively inexpensive gemstone for everyday jewelry. It is the birthstone of February.
